If you would like to start your very own twitter, here is a great script that could do the job well. Laconi.ca is the script name and you could find one running at Identi.ca. It is a great script because it shares most of the same API as twitter. With little effort, a twitter application could easily be used with Laconica. Plus this twitter clone script is free.
I have tried Identi.ca and it is just great, plus it has groups that twitter does not have. This is a great free php script.
